History beneath my feet

While walking the sidewalks of Wilmette to and from my train and walking the dogs I've noticed a few historical markers. The first I spotted on a sidewalk at Woodbine and Crescent Circle, across the street from our house. It shows that the sidewalk was laid in
1911. Our house was built in 1910 so that's consistent. It's surprising that concrete has lasted that long, especially with our freeze-thaw cycles in the winter, construction/remodeling, and all the trees in our area that push up sidewalk sections over time.
The other surprise under foot is now located in the crosswalk at 10th and Oakwood Avenue; a neighbor told me it used to be at 9th and Oakwood but was relocated the last time they worked on the bricks on our block. This marker shows the bricks had previously

been relaid as a part of the WPA project during the Great Depression.
