The Internet transforms modern life (no, Duh!)
CNN.com has a nice retrospective on how the Internet has transformed modern life. I know it sure changed mine! I still remember receiving an e-mail in April 1994 from a senior VP at Baxter telling me to contact Joe who was just setting up our first intranet web server! We'd been using the early Internet in 1992 & 1993, but it was all text based information (mostly government research information), but I was lucky enough to get involved with the world wide web in 1994 and haven't looked back! The web is such an indispensible part of our everyday lives that I now call our cable company within minutes if our connection gets dropped! Back in 1994 we often had to unplug FAX machines or disconnect entire e-mail dial-up networks to do a live Internet demo. I remember how excited I was being able to demo a web site I'd built in Illinois to a group in Brussels by making a trans-Atlantic phone call and connecting at 14,400 baud! Now we can't stand it if we're not on broadband all the time. Ah, progress!
Thanks to all the developers at NCSA (Univ. of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana) who developed Mosaic and gave it away to get us started!
