Google Moves to Challenge Web Portals
There's an article in today's New York Times: Google Moves to Challenge Web Portals about a new Google feature to allow personalization when you visit the google.com. They already offered some personalization ("Search Desktop" shows if you've got their desktop search tool installed), but this new personalization allows you to preview Gmail messages (what, you don't have a Gmail account?!? Actually, I have one but don't use it that much. My daughter uses hers, but you have to be comfortable searching for an old message without using folders to store them! Gmail uses "themes", but it's just not the same.).
You can preview Google's personalized portal at http://www.google.com/ig
Even though this doesn't come close to Yahoo's offering ("My Yahoo!" has been available for almost 9 years!) or others out there, it can only get more powerful as it integrates with the other Google offerings. I still wish I'd bought stock in Google! Google closed at $239.18 Thursday, almost three times the price the company set for its initial public offering nine months ago.
